About
Why do we organize this conference?
The situation
The number of animals kept at home, and the range of their species, is constantly on the rise in the EU. This causes problems for Member States: stray animals, fragile animal welfare and irresponsible ownership.
Domesticated animals, such as cats and dogs, are the most widespread in the EU, but exotic wild animals are increasingly kept as house pets as well.
Wild animals with unknown biological characteristics are a potential threat to humans as they can cause physical harm and spread contagious diseases.
These problems are encouraging Member States to look for both national and EU-wide solutions.
The EU Animal Health Law and the European Parliament’s resolution on a new EU Animal Welfare Strategy pave the way towards better animal welfare management in Europe. However, it is also important to discuss how EU policy applies to animal-related institutions and organizations in Member States, and debate the future outlook of pet animal welfare in the EU.
Aims of the Conference
Taking into consideration the issues mentioned above, we invite you to be a part of the European Companion Animal Welfare and Protection Conference, which is scheduled to take place in Vilnius, 29-30 September 2016.
The conference aims to raise the standards of companion animal welfare and protection all over Europe by educating and provoking discussions about the development of companion animal welfare and its science. The current situation and EU-wide practical implications in companion animal welfare and protection, pet ownership, threats to public health and the environment, as well as the animals themselves, are to be discussed during the conference. EU companion animal welfare science development will be presented and encouraged as well.
The audience will consist of the European Commission, representatives of institutions of Lithuania and other EU member states, veterinarians, animal welfare organizations, animal shelters, dog and cat breeders and breeders’ organizations, dog trainers, representatives of zoos, journalists and other interested parties.
